Messaggi d'amore

The struggles of walking his faith that we all endure

Sì, mio signore.

I am now here in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, on mission, staying at the priestly center of Padre Tony. Each day, we have lunch together, la comida, as they say. Several additional priests, to the ones who are living here with Padre Tony, come to join us from their surrounding churches.

One is Padre Carlos, or Lolo, a name given to him by Monsignor Nicanor many years ago. I remember him when he was a seminarian. Little in stature, still so quiet, humble and loving, as well as giving in his nature.

Then there is Padre Osvaldo, whom I also knew when he was at the seminary. Osvaldo has eyes like a deer and a smile that joyfully lights the room. He was always smart and attentive and still laughs at his own jokes, but also the jokes of the other priests. Our Lord has called him to serve at the Cathedral here in Puerto Plata, where he is quite proud, humbly so. He says that the square of the cathedral is his, where people join each day and night, the cathedral by the sea.

Then there is Nelson, Padre Nelson, whom I also knew from the seminary and watched him grow. He, too, also comes with a smile. And is always so kind, talkative and has always been open in sharing his heart, the struggles of walking his faith that we all endure.

And now there is also a new priest. Padre Junior is his name. Several years out of seminary and has been called to serve with Padre Osvaldo at the Cathedral. Junior is quieter, and taller, than the rest. He listens attentively and is a graceful soul. He has a big smile and large brown eyes that, when he looks at you, it is as though he understands with a godly heart.

There are more and they are a joy.

I am meant to give them, to serve them, with the love of God. I watched them grow in faith, in their sacraments, and they are light and salt for our Lord. And I am thankful to know them. I pray to express that gratitude today and my love for them when we gather.

What else can I say? Each day, the sunlight reigns and the winds blow, and the sea moves in this silver port centuries later. May the mystery of your love be fulfilled in me, Lord, to serve all with humility and truth, with love and pure charity.
